Propranolol is a beta-blocker prescribed to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure, tremors, and a number of other circulatory conditions. If you are allergic to propranolol, have asthma or a heart block do not use this medicine. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without previously talking to your doctor as it may cause unwanted complications. If you have a scheduled surgery make sure you tell your surgeon about taking propranolol, as you may be required to temporarily stop taking it.
In the treatment of hypertension propranolol is complementary to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and bodyweight control. If you are using this medicine for hypertension make sure you take the entire amount prescribed by the doctor even if you do not feel you have high blood pressure. This condition is particularly dangerous because you may not feel you have a problem there. If you have any of the following medical conditions you may be required a dose adjustment or an alternative method of treatment should be found: diabetes, low blood pressure, heart failure, depression, heart problems (slow heart rate, congestive heart failure, heart block), kidney or liver disease, a thyroid problem, circulation problems.
