The biggest opening weekends get all the attention nowadays, but every once in a while there are films that completely bomb at the box-office. Last weekend we had one of those movies with the release of ‘Won’t Back Down” which had the worst opening for a widely released film of all time.
Fox must have known the movie would not be a hit with audiences because they put no marketing into the film, and as a result it tanked. The movie is estimated to have a $25 million dollar budget and will probably not come close to making that money back. So in honor of one of the biggest flops ever, here are the 5 worst box-office openings for a film released in over 2,500 theaters.
5) Rumor Has It
Budget: $70,000,000 (rumored)
Total Gross: $43,000,262
Even though the Jen Aniston rom-com didn’t do so well opening weekend, it did go on to gross over $40 million dollars, so the movie wasn’t a complete flop. And it even got an Adele song named after it, so it all can’t be that bad.
Studio: New Line Cinema
Total Gross: $8,117,637
I know absolutely nothing about this film, here is the IMDB synopsis: “A young man moves from Montana to Florida with his family, where he’s compelled to engage in a fight to protect a population of endangered owls’.
3) Lucky You
Total Gross: $5,758,950
A $55 million dollar budget? Wow, that is just absurd, Warner Bros. should be ashamed.
2) The Rocker
Total Gross: $6,409,528
The premise of this movie seemed like a great idea. Funny man Rainn Wilson as an over the top failed Rocker– what’s not to like? Even Emma Stone was in the movie, but for whatever reason ‘The Rocker’ could not get audience’s attention.
1) Won’t Back Down
Total Gross: N/A
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s box-office numbers go to extremes. She has been in the 4th largest opening weekend of all-time and the worst opening weekend of all-time. Maggie sure knows how to pick a movie.
